Progress Marketer of the Year
Irving Oil, based in Saint John, N.B. is Progress magazine’s inaugural Marketer of the Year. The award recognizes its Cruisin’ to Win campaign for driving customers to Irving Mainway locations - truly connecting great marketing and business success. Terry Small, Irving’s manager of marketing, communications and advertising says, “We were beyond happy, the results surpassed our expectations.”
 
The Marketer of the Year award recognizes the connection between smart marketing and capital as the driving force for growth and prosperity for this region. Target Marketing and Communications Inc. of St. John’s worked with Irving Oil to create the winning campaign that appeared on Atlantic Canadian and northern New England radios and in newspapers during the summer of 2003.
 
Finalists for this award were announced at the 2004 ICE Awards in May. They included
Canjet Airlines, Halifax; Eastlink Communications, Halifax; Irving Oil, Saint John; Nova Scotia Office of Health Promotion, Halifax; and the Truro Power Centre, Truro. Each of these organizations implemented marketing campaigns that demonstrated clearly defined objectives, appropriate creative, strong leadership, and measurable results.
 
“What we were looking for and what the client was looking for was something that would break through and catch the audience’s attention,” says Laurelyn Priestly, Target’s director of account management. The quirky ads featured prize-winners but instead of interviewing the winners of cars, boats and dream getaways, the ads profiled winners of such things as a chocolate bar or a bag of chips.
 
The marketing campaign was a success with the advertising industry as well as the public; it has won several awards, including two gold medals at Marketing Magazine’s 2004 Marketing Awards and Best of Show at the third annual ICE Awards in Halifax.
