    Quality product

Our HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) Renewable Diesel is an eco-friendly, low-carbon, advanced biofuel that can replace standard diesel without affecting engine performance or requiring any modifications to tanks or vehicle engines. Furthermore, HVO is approved by most major OEMs for use in their latest diesel engines* and has better cold flow properties in cold temperatures.

  • Content

    Environmentally friendly

Our HVO Renewable Diesel can achieve up to a net 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by reducing NOx (nitrogen oxides), PM (particulate matter) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions when compared with regular diesel.

  • Content

    Uses

Our HVO can be used in diesel engines for both on-road and off-road purposes. These include transport, haulage, HGVs, vans, buses, cars, mobile plant and construction machinery, boilers and space heaters, tractors and mobile farm machinery, generators, marine bunker fuel and data centre primary fuel source.

  • Content

    Pioneering

Our Whitegate refinery was one of the first in the world to produce HVO. Initially, the product was a mixture of HVO and conventional diesel. This expertise has enabled us to offer HVO Renewable Diesel, made from 100% sustainable sources.

  • Content

    Regulatory compliance

Our HVO meets international fuel standard IS EN15940 Class A. It can assist you in reducing your carbon footprint by effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and help you achieve Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals or other regulatory emissions reduction requirements.

    Accreditation

Our Whitegate refinery holds ISCC accreditation, which ensures feedstocks are sustainable and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction is verified through independent compliance audits.

Q. What is HVO?

A. HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a second-generation biofuel that can be used as a direct replacement for conventional diesel. It is an eco-friendly, low-carbon fuel that’s produced from renewable feedstocks. The name ‘HVO’ or ‘Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil’ originated in the early 2000s when only vegetable oils were used as biofuel feedstocks. However, today’s HVO is produced from non-food grade vegetable oils, used cooking oils (UCO), residue fat fractions and wastes derived from meat and food industries (tallow).

Q. Does HVO comply with the ULSD EN590 specification?

A. The quality standard for HVO is EN 15940:2016; this is similar to the EN 590, but there is one key difference: density. HVO is less dense than diesel. This has little to no impact on performance. In fact, it has better cold flow properties than regular diesel.

Q. Can I use HVO in my engine?

A. Most Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) approve HVO for use in the majority of their modern diesel engines (Euro 5 & 6) without affecting vehicle warranties. We advise that you confirm this with your vehicle supplier prior to using HVO.

Q. Are engine modifications required?

A. No, HVO is a “drop-in” replacement for diesel engines and no modifications are required. We advise that you confirm this with your vehicle supplier before using HVO.

Q. Is AdBlue still required?

A. Yes, AdBlue is still required when running HVO. We advise that you seek advice from your vehicle supplier prior to using HVO.

Q. How does HVO differ from other biofuels, such as FAME?

A. HVO is created using a hydro-treating process (similar to standard diesel). FAME is created using a different process (transesterification). FAME content in diesel fuel is limited to a maximum of 7%, however, HVO has no such constraint.

Q. Does HVO reduce emissions?

A. Yes, HVO is manufactured from renewable feedstocks, using a high quality hydrotreatment process to create a low carbon alternative to conventional diesel, with carbon savings of about 85-90%. HVO also reduces harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions and particulate matter (PM).

Q. Does HVO require special storage in comparison to diesel?

A. No, HVO has the same chemical components as diesel and therefore no special storage is required. We advise customers to always maintain good tank housekeeping practices. If the customer intends to convert storage from diesel/ SFGO to 100% HVO, we advise that tank cleaning is completed before storage. This is especially important if the customer is reselling.

Q. How do I know Irving HVO comes from sustainable sources?

A. Irving Oil Whitegate Refinery holds the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) accreditation, meaning our supply chain and manufacturing processes are independently audited to ensure compliance with EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). This is an important certification for HVO suppliers, as it proves sustainability throughout the supply chain and reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Q. Does HVO contain palm oil?

A.

No, Irving HVO does not contain palm oil, but is instead derived from waste products in line with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) requirements to meet the Irish RTFO sustainability criteria.

Q. Can Irving provide a Proof of Sustainability (POS) certificate for my HVO?

A. Yes, Irving can provide a Proof of Sustainability certificate. POS certificate is supplied if requested by the customer at the time of order and is generated on a monthly basis after the order is complete.

Q. How is HVO priced?

A.

There are different price rules and taxes for HVO, all of which are dependent on its intended use. We are happy to discuss your product needs and once we understand your requirements, we can provide you with a competitive price.
