Our values
At Irving Oil, safety is a core value and is fundamental to how we operate our business every day. We always strive to do the right things, in the right ways, at all times for our employees, our communities and the environment.

About the Lorneville pipeline

Irving Oil operates one bunker line which runs from our Saint John refinery to Coleson Cove Generating Station – a distance of about 22 kilometres. The line is located mostly underground.

Products handled in this pipeline include:

  • Middle Distillate Hydrocarbons such as heating oil or diesel
  • Heavy Distillate Hydrocarbons such as bunker fuel

The following section outlines the potential effects of this substance in the unlikely event of an emergency.

  • Middle Distillate Hydrocarbons can release vapours that can form flammable mixtures and can cause eye, skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory irritation. They may be harmful if inhaled, and can contaminate soil and water if released to the environment.
  • Bunker fuel is an odorous substance that is combustible. Inhalation of vapours may be harmful and cause dizziness.  It can contaminate soil and water if released to the environment.

Our safety commitment

Irving Oil has a rigorous emergency management program in place to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from incidents. Across our operations, these plans are part of our standard procedures. Regarding our Lorneville pipeline, our emergency management plans are based, primarily, on prevention, with equipment inspection and maintenance programs in place. In addition, employees are trained in detailed operating and emergency procedures with a constant focus on safe and efficient operations.

In the unlikely event of an emergency along our Lorneville pipeline, we wish to share the following information with our neighbours.
