Welcoming and supporting LGBTQ employees doesn’t end when the Pride parade is over
Families come in all shapes and sizes. At Irving Oil, we celebrate the LGBTQ community and seek out ways to show our support for inclusion in our workplaces and communities.
One of the ways we celebrate our commitment to diversity is by participating in Pride events in the communities where we live and work. Over the years, our participation in Pride has grown from Saint John, NB, and Halifax, NS, to include Portsmouth, NH, and Dublin, Ireland.
“Every year, our participation amazes me and the feeling of support from colleagues, the community and the company is personally overwhelming,” says John Theriault, who works in HR at Irving Oil and is a member of the LGBTQ community. “I joined Irving Oil after seeing a post on Facebook during Pride week a few years ago that simply had a pride flag on it.”
But our commitment to diversity doesn’t end when Pride season is over. John is also a member of our recently established Diversity & Inclusion Council, which meets throughout the year to identify ways to advance workplace diversity and inclusion.
Another Council member, Marisa Christensen, says that the group is “not just about cultural diversity, it’s about diversity in our thinking and decision making. Allowing people to be themselves everyday will enable them to be their best at their jobs.”
John couldn’t agree more: “The fact that I can be a part of a company that openly participates in Pride and celebrates all of their employees is truly one of the best career feelings!”
