Respecting the environment
We strive to raise the bar for responsible operations and are constantly working to reduce our environmental footprint. We’ve also developed a passion for protecting local wildlife. We believe that wildlife care and conservation means taking concrete actions to protect endangered or at-risk species.
Conserving our oceans
We celebrate our ports and oceans for their natural beauty and the important livelihood they offer our local communities and economies. We never take them for granted. That’s why we’ve partnered with leading researchers to protect our oceans and sea life. Together we’ve produced tangible results, like moving shipping lanes in the Bay of Fundy and reducing our plastic waste.
Protecting our wetlands
Since the 1970s, we have partnered with Ducks Unlimited Canada to protect wetlands in our communities and the wildlife that call them home – one as close as the Little River Wetland at the doorstep of our Saint John Refinery. Wetlands are a vital part of our coastal ecosystems and provide important benefits for humans and animals alike.
As a responsible operator and energy producer, compliance with government regulations is only a starting point. We strive to raise the bar by being among the first to adopt stringent fuel specifications and investing in emission control technology to improve our environmental performance.
We continuously respond to consumer demand for lower sulphur content in transportation and home heating fuels. After significant upgrades at our refinery and other improvements, we lead the way for ultra-low sulphur and gasoline products. Now, our gasolines are TOP TIER, the highest cleanliness standard for gasoline performance.
Every year, we search more than 30,000 valves and components by hand as part of a longstanding emissions reduction program to find, and reduce, vapours that often consist of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This has led to an average year-over-year fugitive emissions reduction of 32 per cent since 2007.
Most of our crude supply and finished products are distributed by ship. To protect against marine incidents, all ships we charter must be double-hulled so that any breach of the outer hull would not result in a product leak. Prior to charter, we carry out a thorough due diligence process to verify the safety of each ship.
We recognize that human activity is impacting our global climate and requires action by us all. While we provide our customers with cleaner transportation fuels, we also strive to do so with the least impact to our environment, particularly by reducing our carbon footprint.
Innovation and technology
Our continuous progress in environmental performance is a direct result of investing in facility improvements like sulphur recovery technology, which has led to substantial reductions in sulphur dioxide emissions.
More recently, our focus is on meeting new fuel specifications and further reducing Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.
