SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Irving Oil announced today a $3-million contribution to the Irving Oil Field House multiplex expansion project, reflecting its long-standing commitment to Saint John and its belief in the importance of community spaces that enhance quality of life. The project will help shape the future of recreation in the Saint John region, creating new opportunities for residents and visitors to connect, stay active and participate in community life.
Irving Oil’s investment builds on a $2-million gift made by the company in 2019 toward the construction of the Irving Oil Field House. This adjoining project will include two NHL-regulation-sized ice surfaces and create a new home for the East Saint John Branch Public Library, bringing sport, recreation, learning and community gathering together at one site.
As part of its gift, Irving Oil will receive naming rights to the multiplex facility and its two arenas. The arenas will be named in honour of Irving Oil founder K.C. Irving and former Chairman Emeritus Arthur L. Irving, recognizing their extraordinary contributions to business, community development and the growth of Saint John and Atlantic Canada.
“Saint John is our home, and we are proud to continue investing in a community that has played such an important role in our company’s story and success,” says Jeff Matthews, President & CEO of Irving Oil. “Naming the arenas in honour of K.C. Irving and Arthur L. Irving is especially meaningful as both believed deeply in the power of teamwork to accomplish great things.”
The expanded facility will build on the success of the Irving Oil Field House, creating additional capacity for year-round sport and recreation, while broadening the range of community services available at the location. The project is expected to create new economic opportunities and enhance the region’s ability to attract additional recreational, community and other major events.
“Irving Oil believed in the vision for the Irving Oil Field House from the very beginning and we are incredibly grateful to see that commitment continue as we take this next transformational step,” says Bill MacMackin, Board Chair, Greater Saint John Field House Inc. “This $3-million gift brings tremendous momentum to the project and demonstrates the kind of community leadership that will help transform our vision of an inclusive community destination into a reality.”
The project is scheduled for completion in 2029.
“We are incredibly grateful to Irving Oil for this extraordinary $3-million contribution and their continued investment in Saint John's future,” said Donna Noade Reardon, Mayor of the City of Saint John. “The new multiplex will serve as a cornerstone facility for our community’s future, bringing residents and visitors together to learn, play, connect, and create lasting memories for generations. On behalf of Common Council and the people of Saint John, thank you for your generosity, leadership and unwavering support of our region.”
