Team New Brunswick Crowned Atlantic Canadian Champions At 22nd Annual Irving Oil Challenge Cup
Team Nova Scotia Wins Silver and Team Newfoundland & Labrador Wins Bronze
MONTAGUE, PE — After an intense gold medal final game, Team New Brunswick, the North West Irving Oil Bulls, emerged victorious in overtime against Team Nova Scotia, the Halifax Irving Oil ACCEL Hawks, with a score of 3-2.
“Wow, this is the best moment of my hockey career since I started playing,” says Bradley Sappier, Captain of the North West Irving Oil Bulls. “Our team played hard and I’m so proud of the guys; the hard work paid off. We will always be able to call ourselves Challenge Cup Champions.”
“This has been an incredible journey and I’m so proud of our team,” says Steven Jones, Coach of the North West Irving Oil Bulls. “Every team represents excellence on ice so to be the Challenge Cup Champions is a dream come true. Thank you to Irving Oil for bringing it all together.”
The Bulls came out on top after a nail-biting game with the Hawks, who had previously been undefeated in the tournament. Team Newfoundland & Labrador, the St. John’s Irving Oil Ice Breakers, won bronze after defeating the Host Team, the Kings County Irving Oil Kings, with a score of 4-1.
For over 20 years, Irving Oil has sponsored all 36 teams in the Atlantic Canada Bantam AAA Hockey League on an annual basis, supporting over 23,000 young athletes in communities across the region. Over the years many famous hockey players have participated in this tournament on their path to the pros, including Sidney Crosby, Jon Sim, Luke Adams and Colin White.
The Irving Oil Challenge Cup Facebook Contest continues until April 5th, in support of Kidsport organizations throughout Atlantic Canada. When fans vote for their favourite province, their vote helps that province’s KidSport organization get one step closer to a donation of up to $5000 from Irving Oil.
