Lucy's story

"The day Lucy was born was one of the happiest days of my life but, within hours, she began struggling to breathe." 

Rushed to Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin, Lucy was immediately placed on monitors. Doctors discovered a narrowing of the aorta in her heart, along with two small holes. 

"We were unable to help or even fully believe what was happening," says Nathalie, Lucy's mother. 

Travelling two-and-a-half hours each way from Galway to Dublin for appointments, Nathalie first learned about Top Oil’s Fuel the Care programme during Lucy's stay in hospital. 

In partnership with Children’s Health Foundation, Top has supported more than 1,200 local families like Lucy's since 2022 through our Fuel the Care programme, providing fuel vouchers to families travelling to access medical care for a child. 

"The vouchers helped ease the cost of travel and kept our family close, allowing us to focus on Lucy's healing," says Nathalie. 

At just three weeks old, Lucy underwent open-heart surgery and, during her hospital stay, everyone from doctors to cleaning staff stopped by to check on her. A month after her birth, Lucy finally went home. 

Today, she's a proud big sister who loves jumping in puddles and feeding sheep. 

"Looking at her now, you would never know she was ever sick," says Nathalie.
