Background
Sarah grew up in Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia, and attended Acadia University to study Business Administration. After her first accounting class in her second semester, she decided to incorporate as many accounting classes as possible in her schedule. Sarah took part in the co-operative education program at Acadia to gather relevant job experience and to see what type of accounting positions would interest her after university.
In her third year of university, Sarah decided she wanted to get her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation after her undergrad degree and began evaluating potential career opportunities that would support this. When she was in her fourth year, Irving Oil visited Acadia to give a presentation on their CPA pre-approved program route and from that moment Sarah knew that this was the right path for her.
Career
Sarah is a Senior Accountant with the Order-to-Cash Accounting Team. She is responsible for overseeing the accounting activity of the team and reviewing the Intermediate and Junior Accountant's entries and reconciliations, along with performing bank reconciliations and financial statement note reviews.
Sarah started with the company as a Junior Accountant in the CPA pre-approved program route and rotated through four different positions over two years while taking CPA module courses and writing the Common Final Exam. These positions included two with General Accounting Teams, Financial Planning and Analysis and Taxation. Upon completion of her CPA educational requirements, Sarah joined the Corporate Back Office Team as an Intermediate Accountant during which time she received her CPA.
Sarah continues to work with Irving's CPA program and acts as a CPA mentor to three candidates currently in the program. She has been able to gain valuable experience in various roles during her time with Irving Oil and see different parts of the company's operations which she truly enjoys. One of her favourite things about her job is being able to engage in continuous learning and getting to mentor candidates going through the same program she did and watching them succeed.
